In 2008, while a student at Bard College, I stumbled upon a closet full of boxes of VHS, pieces of paper, and photos. This room full of boxes turned out to be the archive of Miranda July's lady-made video project Joanie4Jackie (formerly Big Miss Moviola). Over the next year, under the guidance of Ed Halter and Jackie Goss, I began digging through the archive, reorganizing things, watching endless tapes, scanning old zines, and piecing together the puzzle of artifacts left from Miranda. In 2010, this archive and a variety of interviews I conducted turned into my senior these film, pure&magicalpussypower: a documentary on joanie4jackie, which won the Jerome B. Hill Award in Documentary Excellence. With the archive in need of some extra care and new life, I restarted the J4J tutorial with Jackie Goss at Bard College and started a student club to get funding to preserve the archive. We started inviting guest artists so students could meet some of the amazing women who had been involved with J4J since the 90s and other exciting women we discovered along the way. We began screening films made by women, collections long forgotten and reviving the Chainletter tapes. Guest artists include K8 Hardy, Ryder Cooley, Elisabeth Subrin, JD Samon & MEN and Katrina del Mar. Film screenings include Point Break (Kathryn Bigelow), works by Sadie Benning, Ratcather (Lynne Ramsey), a collection of performance videos from the 70s, County Down (Laura Parnes) and Kelly Reichardt's River of Grass among many many others. Seven years later, the archive is now is much better condition at the Getty Institute. Miranda July, Astria Suparek and Yuri Ono have launched a brand new website for the project which digitally tells much of the story and preserves the archive we digitized at Bard forever on the internet.
